Alhaji Dembo M. Badjie is a retired Gambian civil servant and diplomat. He entered the Gambian Government in 1970, taking a break to study Political Science and Economics at Rust College, followed by postgraduate studies at Glasgow Caledonian University.

Diplomacy

In 2010, he was appointed as Gambian Ambassador to India (also serving Bangladesh and Myanmar), before being redeployed to the Gambian Embassy in the People’s Republic of China in 2016 after the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and the Gambia. In 2017, he retired from the Gambian civil service and wrote a book entitled “Outlook On Governance & Administration in the Gambia” and now focuses on serving the people through the Africa Amanah Foundation.

Education & Experience

Civil Servant – the Gambia Civil Service

Dembo M. Badjie began his public service career in 1970, entering the Gambia Civil Service at a young age. After a brief hiatus, he re-entered in 1978, going on to serve in various government ministries, including Local Government and Education. These foundational years laid the groundwork for his future in diplomacy and public administration.

Gambian Embassy in Brussels & Mission to the United Nations

Transitioned into the foreign service, representing the Gambia abroad. Served as First Secretary at the Gambian Embassy in Brussels, Belgium, and later at the Gambian Mission to the United Nations, where he engaged in international diplomacy and multilateral cooperation.

Ambassador of the Gambia to Sierra Leone

Appointed as the Ambassador to Sierra Leone in 2004.

Ambassador of the Gambia to India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar

In 2010, he was appointed as Gambian Ambassador to India, with concurrent accreditation to Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Ambassador of the Gambia to the People’s Republic of China

Following the resumption of diplomatic relations between the Gambia and China in 2016, he was redeployed as Ambassador to China.

Chairman – Africa Amanah Foundation

After retiring from the civil service in 2017, Dembo M. Badjie took on a leadership role in the nonprofit sector as Chairman of the Africa Amanah Foundation. Under his guidance, the foundation works to support communities through charitable initiatives and sustainable development efforts across Africa.
